RK3188 is currently one of the most popular chipset in the market that’s cost effective and also is fast performance. U8 Android Set-top Box has the same casing design as the U1 Box I previously reviewed, but with more advanced hardware specs. It offers significant improvements in 3D Gaming area due to higher CPU Clock speeds combined with Quad Core Mali-400 MP GPU. Performance improvement are about 50% higher vs. Dual Core model based on the older RK3066 chipset.

The Device could probably tweaked higher, but if you don’t want it to heat it more best leave it in current settings exactly as there are.

System info

XBMC Media Player

1080p & 720p Samples were tested with latest XBMC Media Player Build 14.0 Alpha 7. Still, there isn’t hardware acceleration and decoding Support from Rockchip Soc Company. Frames dropped and video playback is slow and choppy. Best Solution is using Special XBMC build specially made for Rockchip devices or install XAF Custom XBMC build, Both support full hardware video decoding playback with external Media player software such as MX Player.

Note :

Highly recommended using pre-installed XBMC build provided by Egreat company, specially made for Rockchip based devices. It`s the easiest way to use external media player support since the APK Package also includes a build in player. This way you don’t have to deal with any complicated installations or special settings.

Installing & Configuring XAF XBMC with  MX Player

1 – Install  MX Player for NEON Devices

2 – Install  XAF Custom XBMC Build for NEON Set Top Boxes

3 – Install one of the following apps : WiFi File Transfer , AirDroid , SnapPea

4 -  Copy playercorefactory.xml file to the following location :

5 – Play a video file with MX Player to make sure if its the default player, if it asks select “default player”

6 – In MX Player and go to >Decoder and select “Use h/w+ decoder”.

Installing  Navi-X Add-on

1 – After Installing XBMC Download Navi-X

2 – click on System > Addons > Install from Zip file and Select the Navi-X zip file.

3 – Exit to the main screen of XBMC and check in Programs … Navi-X should be installed there

4 – Click on  “>” on  the upper right corner of the screen > Set Default player > [Auto Select]

    Local  Playback Test

  • All Samples stored  locally on 16GB Class 10 MicroSD Card.
  • Tested  with XAF XBMC build & MX Player.

Rank scores displayed on the table below are based on a value scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is the highest score and 1 is the lowest.
